Safe and With Honour

On the first day of 1942, in the midst of another tremendous global struggle, on a train speeding between Ottawa and Washington, Winston Churchill called his staff and reporters into the dining car to make a toast:

“Here’s to 1942, here’s to a year of toil — a year of struggle and peril, and a long step forward towards victory. May we all come through safe and with honour.”

The last two years have also been years of toil, struggle and peril. The coming one will no doubt bring its own struggles, but here’s to 2022 anyway. I hope we all come through safe and with honour.

Happy New Year.
