Giving Everything for the Animals

From April 14 to 20, we are celebrating National Volunteer Week and the contributions of close to 800 volunteers who give their time, effort and heart to Ottawa’s homeless animals.

There is no question, without the support of our volunteers, the OHS would not be able to care for thousands of animals each year. The work of volunteers is ingrained in everything we do, from volunteer veterinarians who work alongside our staff veterinarians to provide life-saving care for animals with nowhere else to turn; food bank volunteers who are essential in helping pets and their families stay together; youth foster volunteers who give temporary homes to bunnies in need — we couldn’t be here for the animals without these passionate people.

Our volunteers are made of something special. They give so much for the animals and expect nothing in return. As you might expect, they have shared that the purr of a cat who learned to trust people or a dog wagging their tail for the first time after a major surgery are all the reward they need. That said, their work is not always easy, the outcomes not always good – and there are days that we share our heartbreak and not just our successes.

I speak for the entire OHS team, and I hope you’ll join me, in saying that we are forever grateful for the volunteers who give their all for the animals.

Thank you. Animals in need have a home because of you. We couldn’t do it without you.
