Last Chance to Save Canada’s Horses

The OHS is sometimes referred to as the “dog and cat society” (and we might add rabbit to that these days), given that those species account for the majority of the animals who come into our care. But our mission is, actually, focused on all animals. And today, we must speak up for horses.

You NEED to call and email your Member of Parliament right now to voice your support for Bill C-355. The bill will end the export of live Canadian horses for slaughter overseas, and will be voted on by the end of the month.

Each year, Canada ships thousands of horses overseas for slaughter. Trapped in cramped crates, the horses may be left without food, water or rest for up to 28 hours. Between 2013 and 2023, close to 45,000 horses endured this terrible fate.

As you might expect, this cruel and unnecessary practice has gathered attention and criticism from across the country — and the collective outrage of a community that cares made Bill C-355 possible. Now, your steadfast support is needed to stamp out this abhorrent practice once and for all.

Each phone call and email pushes the needle ever closer to Bill C-355 coming to pass and drives a landmark victory for the well-being of not just horses, but all animals throughout Canada. When Bill C-355 passes, it will show that Canada cares about the humane and compassionate treatment of animals and will not stand idly by as innocent creatures suffer.

If you’re not sure what to say, you can use the wording at the end of this article to build your message to your MP.

The progress we have made today is only possible because of the continued efforts and heart of people who care. Now is not the time to relent. I hope you will join me and our community of animal advocates by showing your support for Bill C-355.

President & CEO

Dear [MP],

I support Bill C-355 and ending the cruel and unnecessary practice of exporting Canadian horses for slaughter overseas.

Right now, these horses are forced into cramped crates and endure inhumane conditions without food, water or rest for up to 28 hours. In just 10 years, 45,000 Canadian horses have suffered this terrible fate.

I know you agree that Canada can and should do better for its animals, and that you will vote to put an end to the inhumane treatment of thousands of horses.

Sincerely,
