Happy Holidays!

As the new President & CEO of the Ottawa Humane Society, I wanted to introduce myself and to say thank you, on behalf of all of us at the OHS, for everything you have done for the animals this past year.

While I started working at the OHS 19 years ago, I actually started my relationship with the OHS more than 25 years ago as a volunteer — walking dogs, fostering cats and fundraising at the walkathon.

As it’s said: when action meets compassion, lives change. Through your actions and your compassion, thousands of animals’ lives were changed for the better this year.

Happy holidays to you and yours, from all of us and the animals at the OHS.

Behind the Beard

Now meet Santa himself! Or rather the man who has happily portrayed him for many years. Chris Jones has been volunteering with the OHS since 2012 and has volunteered for events, in the office, humane education programming, and is one of our volunteer ambassadors.

Thank you, Chris, for being a wonderful Santa Paws and for helping so many families make happy, holiday memories with their pets.

Big Win for Small Animals

Last month we introduced the new small animal enrichment program. We already have volunteers for canine and feline enrichment, but there was a gap for the small animals in our care. These volunteers provide enrichment for small animals by providing them with activities that encourage them to forage, play, exercise, dig, problem solve and one-on-one quality time, such as petting, feeding and grooming.

Thank you so much to everyone who joined the program. We have all the volunteers we need for now, but are so excited to see how this program grows.

Give Them a Home for the Holidays: Foster
We can’t thank our foster volunteers enough for everything they do for the animals, but we still need more people to join this life-saving program. Merlin is just one of the dogs who is looking for a foster home for the holidays.

Kitten Spy Cam
If you’ve been to the adoption centre in the past month or so, you may have noticed a curious device in the community cat room. It is a camera that we’ll be using for virtual humane education and a few other endeavours to bring live kittens to kids eager to learn about animals. For now, the camera is not turned on, but stay tuned for more updates!

Holiday Gifts for the Animals
Jingle is back at the OHS helping us prepare for the holiday season. You can catch up on all of Jingle’s latest adventures on our Facebook page, and you can make a gift to make sure Ottawa’s animals have everything they need for the holidays.
