Provincial Animal Welfare Needs
Why You Should Advocate for the Animals

The animals need your help in Ontario’s coming election.
Your support and advocacy will build a more humane and compassionate community for animals and the people who love them.
Top Animal Welfare Needs in Ontario:
- Improvements for the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act and investigations into animal cruelty and neglect;
- A ban on train and trial hunting pens where captive wild animals are used as bait for competitions and to train hunting dogs; and,
- Improved access to veterinary care by creating long-term solutions to bolster the number of people entering the veterinary profession and addressing the cost of veterinary supplies.
Here are key questions to ask candidates in the lead up to the election:
- Do you plan to improve the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act? If yes, how will you do it? If no, why not?
- Will you fight against cruel practices such as train and trial hunting pens and roadside zoos?
- Will you work towards supporting more accessible veterinary care throughout the province?
There are many ways you can get involved in driving change for the animals. Here are some tools to advocate for animal welfare:
- Join a letter writing campaign;
- Sign a petition calling for action;
- Call a member of the government’s office; and,
- Get involved with the Ottawa Humane Society or another animal welfare organization on advocacy campaigns.
The Ottawa Humane Society advocates for animals across the community, province and country. From supporting stronger protections for all animals to promoting responsible pet ownership, the OHS aims to build a more humane and compassionate community.
But it can’t be done alone. We depend on the support of our caring community to do the most for animals in need. Find out how you can get involved, email our manager of advocacy at sarab@ottawahumane.ca.
