We Need You! Volunteer at the Ottawa Humane Society:

The Ottawa Humane Society is a registered charity. Since 1888 we have provided shelter and medical care for thousands of animals. A lot of what we do for both the animals and the community is made possible by the help of our strong and dedicated volunteer team.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 18 years and older.
  • A minimum commitment of one year is required to volunteer.
  • Volunteers must complete an application form, a criminal records check and attend orientation sessions before beginning their volunteer duties.
  • Volunteers must be able to work safely around all species of animals.
  • The OHS does not accept high school students completing community service hours.

Not 18? You can still help! We always need volunteers to hold events to help raise funds for the animals in our care.

Steps to Becoming an Ottawa Humane Society Volunteer:

  • Review the OHS volunteer programs located on the left sidebar and identify your areas of interest. Each program has specific volunteer requirements.
  • Download a copy of the OHS Volunteer Application Package:
  • Complete the application package and return to the OHS Volunteer Department at volunteer@ottawahumane.ca.
  • Volunteers whose skills and interest areas fit the needs of the organization will be contacted for an interview. If we do not have a volunteer opportunity immediately available, your volunteer applications will be kept on file for 2 months.
  • Following the interview, all volunteers will be asked to complete a criminal record and scheduled for an orientation.

For more information, contact the volunteer department by email at volunteer@ottawahumane.ca or via telephone at 613-725-3166 ext.231.
