National Volunteer Week: Thank you OHS volunteers for being so amazing!

In April, the Ottawa Humane Society celebrated National Volunteer Week by hosting a variety of activities to thank you, our dedicated and amazing volunteers!

Volunteers learned a new thing or two at one of our two educational workshops, networked with fellow volunteers at our annual brunch and pin ceremony where we recognized some of our longest-serving volunteers, participated in raffles, and enjoyed treats in the volunteer lounge and foster office throughout the week. A special thank you to Dr. Glenys Hughes (OHS Volunteer Veterinarian) and Mike Laviolette (OHS Board Member) for donating your time to help make this year’s appreciation week events such a success! Thank you to everyone who joined us in our National Volunteer Week celebrations and for your continued and ongoing support. We simply could not help so many animals without you!

Volunteers in action: Thank you for your ongoing gift of time!

Thank you OHS event volunteers for helping us host our annual FurBall gala on April 9. Thanks to your help, we raised more than $100,000 to continue to help the animals in our care! This event would not have been possible without your enthusiasm and support.

If you are interested in joining our event volunteer team, contact the volunteer department to sign up today — we’d love to have you!

Brightening Lives Animal Visits (BLAV) is wrapping up another amazing season. Last fiscal year, you gave more than 645 visits to those in need. Thank you BLAV volunteers for sharing your companion animals and for helping bring smiles, joy and happiness to our community!

Do you have a companion animal that loves to meet new people and enjoys visiting new places? We are currently recruiting for this program, so contact the volunteer department for more information.

Spring has sprung and so has our kitten population!

orphan kittenThe OHS officially launched our annual orphan kitten program in May due a sudden influx of kittens admitted to the shelter without a mother. Volunteers support and offer these vulnerable kittens a second chance through our in-house and in-foster programs. In-house orphan kitten volunteers provide grooming, socialization, feeding and other enrichment to orphan kittens awaiting their foster placement and specially trained foster volunteers then take these kittens into their home and provide round-the-clock care until the kittens are ready for adoption. Without the support and dedication of our orphan kitten volunteers these tiny, helpless creatures would not have a positive outcome. Thank you orphan kitten volunteers for your ongoing gift and time — we look forward to another lifesaving season!

We need your help!

Warm up your summer by joining a new volunteer program! We are looking for volunteers to help support the following:

PALPAL Cat Assistant: Our Pet Adoption Location (PAL) program allows the OHS to find more homes for cats in our care by partnering with local pet stores. We need volunteers with morning availability who are interested in feeding, cleaning and socializing OHS cats while they are awaiting adoption in our partner PetSmart locations: Herongate, Lansdowne and Emerald Plaza.

OHS Off-Leash Camp Program: This popular summer outreach program teaches children, six to 11, about the importance of proper animal care and welfare with a day or week of fun-filled activities, including hands-on time with animals. If you enjoy working with children and animals, then we have the job for you!

Bingo: We are seeking volunteers to help support a third-party bingo event held every Sunday evening at the Overbrook Bingo Hall. You can help by selling BINGO sheets and providing customer service to guests. All proceeds from this fundraiser go to the animals!

HOPE Volleyball Summerfest: The OHS is fortunate to be a recipient of this year’s HOPE Volleyball Summer Fest. We need your help to fulfill our volunteer requirements to receive the full donation. We are looking for volunteers to fill a variety of positions on Saturday, July 16 at Mooney’s Bay. Interested in supporting this fun-filled event where proceeds go to helping the animals in our care? Contact the volunteer department to sign up today!

Volunteer profile: Thank you Karen Douglas for helping save to save cats’ lives!

Karen Douglas

We are thankful to all of our volunteers for their hard work and dedication. The OHS is especially grateful for outstanding foster volunteers like Karen Douglas. As a foster volunteer, Karen offers a nurturing, loving home to animals who require short-term care outside the shelter environment to become adoptable. Since joining the program, she has provided more than 160 animals with a second chance. Not only does Karen support the foster program — she also donates her time weekly to our in-house orphan kitten program.

Karen tells us why she loves fostering so much: "There are few things more rewarding than taking complete responsibility for tiny, helpless creatures and seeing them blossom under my care. The utter joy that I experience when they thrive is inexplicable and is the reason I continue to support the Ottawa Humane Society as a foster volunteer."

Karen’s volunteer support has been invaluable to the foster department, especially with the harder to place foster animals, like nursing moms or orphan kittens, who require a higher than average level of care. She takes home each foster animal with a smile and we couldn’t be more grateful for her help. Thank you Karen for continuing to make a positive difference for so many animals!

Has Karen’s support and dedication inspired you to want to join our foster program? Find out more today!

garden party

The OHS is very excited to be hosting our 16th annual Garden Party, in honour of the late Chef Kurt Waldele. This year’s festivities are taking place on Sunday, June 26 at the Horticulture Building at Lansdowne Park (1525 Princess Patricia Way, Ottawa).

The Garden Party brings together Ottawa’s top food and beverage venues to raise money for the animals in the care of the Ottawa Humane Society. This event is a delight for the senses and the heart, as the event features Ottawa’s top chefs and mixologists each preparing a tasting dish or cocktail for guests to enjoy, as well as an open bar serving fine wines and craft beer. There will also be an opportunity for guests to bid on a wonderful and eclectic assortment of live and silent auction items.

Don’t forget to purchase your tickets today.
